ANZ CS4 Roadshow – first leg

This week we finished the first leg of the ANZ CS4 Roadshow in Auckland and Brisbane. It was a great start to the tour with huge crowds in both cities. Mike McHugh, Michael Stoddart (Stod) and I showed each of the Premium suites, Design, Web and Production Premium. Apart from a big response to the really cool new features in the apps, people were blown away by the time saving features in the new improved work flows in each of the disciplines.

If you want to see some of these time saving work flows for yourself, head over to Adobe TV and watch the new “Everyday Timesavers” series, starring yours truly and a bunch of my colleagues from the US and Europe including Greg Rewis, Jason Levine, Rufus Deuchler, Karl Soule and Julieanne Kost.

Below are a few photos we took to use in our demos. Yes, they look funny now but they worked well when put into context. The first is one I used the quick select tool in Photoshop to cut out and add Mike and Stod to the Dancing Dudes AIR file. The second is one where Mike cut Stod and I out to put in the Photoshop zoom demo. Very funny…

Auckland and Brisbane… a big thank you! Hope we are back there soon.

We are off to Sydney and Melbourne this week and if the first 2 shows are anything to go by, they should be great.

    Hi Paul,

Had a great time at the Brisbane CS4 RS. Best one yet!

I’m not sure how to get in contact with Michael Stoddart so I’m using this method.

I’d like to know where to get the AJAX framework (yui, jquery, etc) Dreamweaver extension from. I’ve searched the Adobe Exchange with no luck.

    Your help is greatly appreciated.

    Mark

Had a fantastic time at the Roadshow.. can’t wait till I get CS4

  3. paul Says:

Hi Mark, I’ll get Stod to email you! And I just checked and all the AJAX Framework widgets are up on the exchange. All I did was go to the Dreamweaver exchange and search on YUI and jQuery and Phatfusion. For example here is the link to the jQuery calendar I used http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/exchange/index.cfm?event=extensionDetail&extid=1697532
Hope this helps. See you next time in Brisbane!

    Hi Paul,

I’ve been using a rippling displacement effect that Ive attached to a motion tracking class but I can’t remember where I got it from. I saw you at the roadshow in syd and remembered it may have been from you.

    here’s a link to an example: http://andyvern.com/2009/01/30/donnie-darkos-mirror/

I’d just like to know so I can reference whoever it was in the source files. At the moment I’ve credited it to “some Ausie guy from Adobe”.

    Cheers,
    Andy

  5. paul Says:

Hi Andy, nice use of the ripple effect! Yes, I think it was me…
    cheers

  6. Andy Says:

Ah cool, thanks for the code. I’m also wondering if I would get better performance trying to write pixelBender filters for effects like this. I’m interested in this area and have had a bit of a play with pixelBender filters others have written but I don’t really understand the technical talk about hardware and performance.

  7. paul Says:

Yup, better performance with Pixel Bender. There are a couple of ripple filters out there already. If you roll your mouse over Melissa (the cartoon girl) at the top of the blog, I am using one of the PB ripple filters there.

    Hi Paul
we came up to the brisbane roadshow as a class excursion from Kingscliff TAFE (Northern NSW) and the students absolutely loved it and found it completely inspiring-so thank you all very much.
A few of the students have spotted themselves in image 6 of your slide show above and we were wondering if you could email us the original high quality photo just so we can have some fun with it.
thanks again for getting our year off to a great start!!!

  9. paul Says:

Hi there, happy you guys came up for the show. I will certainly email you the image. Hope to see you all next time…
BTW send me links to any zoopy stuff you guys create! cheers

    Hi Paul,

I attended the Melbourne CS4 roadshow yesterday. I thought you, Micheal and Mike were excellent presenters and i got so much out of it! All the things that i didn’t even know that i didn’t know knocked my sock off :)

I just wanted a bit more information on web developing (of which i know nothing about). In particular taking information from databases and updating etc. How difficult would it be for an illustrator/photoshoper (such as myself) and what training would you recommend before i attempt dreamweaver/fireworks?

    Kind regards,
    Linda

Hi Paul, I really enjoyed meeting with you at the Sydney Roadshow…thanks for the info on the 3d engines like AlterNativa3d. Really impressive. My company is now looking at how we can incorporate more Flash and possibly Air into one of our language-learning products. Our current product is JSP + (a bit of) Javascript event handling.

The biggest issue we face is in automated testing – both load & performance testing as well as regression tests. Coverage testing could also be an issue. Any suggestions?

  12. paul Says:

    Hey Linda
Glad you enjoyed the show, and in Mike’s words “hang on to those socks”.
The best way to get more info/training straight away is to go to tv.adobe.com. there is a heap of training videos available that will get you through the next step. Refine your search Adobe TV to Fireworks and Dreamweaver and I can especially recommend Greg Rewis’s series Taming the Web.

  13. paul Says:

    Hi James
Well Flash is certainly ideal for elearning products. I am going to point you at the elearning section of the Adobe site http://www.adobe.com/resources/elearning/. There are a bunch of resources and info available on hooking into LMS and making your files SCORM complient etc. As for load/performance testing there are a number of 3rd party tools available that will help you with this. They vary a lot both in functionality and price so best to compare carefully.

Had a fantastic time at the CS4 launch in Melbourne all the way from Alice Springs. I was intrigued by the presentation from the key note speaker. There were some amazing quotes about the future of technology. Is there a way of obtaining these facts and figures?

  16. paul Says:

Hi Peter, Wow… long trip from Alice Springs!
The video that the keynote speaker used is from YouTube. If you just do a search for “Did you know” on YouTube there are a whole range of versions of the video there.

  17. Alex Lee Says:

    Hi guys,

I certainly enjoyed the Roadshow in Melbourne last week, but the burning question I’m left with is: what was that plug-in for InDesign CS4 that Mr Stoddart showed that imported data from a MySQL database? It looks ideal for what our company already has existing with their database and for automating most of our publishing.

Would very much like to know more! Thanks in advance!

    Hi Alex
Gald you enjoyed the show. I have passed your question on to Stod so he should contact you soon!

  19. Karin Says:

    Hi-iiiiii!
Before I lose my marbles completely, can anyone help/advise/shoot me in the right direction for photo merging in CS4. After the Sydney Roadshow I ran straight to the lapie and started merging…its better than sex yawwwww (not really) moving along. Was I dreaming or did I see “something” in CS4 which “added in pixels/parts of photos” that were missing? Like content scale but better. I’ve merged a number of photos together but I’m missing sections…is there a snazzy way to “clone” automatically? A filter, a plug in? Or will I be filling in manually?

    Help…

    Thanking you in advance :-)

  20. paul Says:

Hi Karen, it must have just been the incredible presentation skills of Mike McHugh that made you think you saw Photoshop adding content. When you photomerge images in Photoshop the images have to overlap and Photoshop works out how to mask each image to align them correctly. I haven’t heard of anyone having pixels or bits missing. Oh… just thought… zoom the finished image in to 100% and see if this gets rid of the gaps. My guess is that the image is fine, it is just that the scale you are viewing at isn’t rendering the masks correctly? Does this help?
